The physical & mechanical properties booklet starts with some initial key definitions of stress and strain and then considers tensile and flexural measurements and the influence of time dependent behaviour and creep. The section on fracture covers both fast fracture (impact) and slow crack growth. For impact the key pendulum impact tests (Izod and Charpy) are briefly discussed while more detail is given on instrumented notch impact testing and valuable information that can be obtained from the load displacement curve. A number of techniques are described for slow crack growth and ESCR before fatigue is briefly discussed. Finally the effect on selected properties of density (crystallinity) and comonomer placement in bimodal polyethylenes is discussed.
