Position: Apprentice Laboratory Technician

An enthusiastic and ambitious apprentice is wanted to join the team at Impact Solutions. Based in Grangemouth, Impact is an accredited materials testing, research and development laboratory that specialises in the physical, analytical, and biodegradable properties of plastics, composites, and packaging materials. Our dynamic team are flexible and adaptable in using their diverse range of knowledge and skills to offer accredited or bespoke solutions for both product and material testing.

The successful candidate will undertake testing, analysis, research and support our team. You will be hands on and not wearing a white coat role as we literally destroy products using a wide variety of industrial tools, chemicals, and temperatures.

As we work throughout the plastics supply chain, from ‘Reactor to Recycle’ and therefore we look for people who enjoy diversity, a changing work schedule and problem solving.

This is an entry level position under the modern apprenticeship scheme.

What might a typical day in this job look like?

Impact undertakes testing of all types of plastic products including pipes, containers, tanks and on the plastic itself, therefore there is not a typical day as every day will be different. You will probably start telling your friends that your job is to ‘break things’!

Responsibilities :

The successful candidate will work within the laboratory following UKAS, HSE and high housekeeping standards following work plans whilst reporting to the senior lab technician.

The post holder is responsible for key laboratory tasks including:

· Performing tasks by following work plans unsupervised

· Data entry to worksheets and work pack completion

· Work with bespoke electronic and electrical equipment to capture data and monitor performance of the long term tests

· Responsibility for upkeep of certain accredited documents such as Equipment records

· Record work carried out on a day to day basis paying attention to accuracy and detail as required by customers and regulators.

· Housekeeping to the highest standards.

· Health and Safety items in the workplace such as Risk assessments & hazard identification.

At times you will be working independently on a small project where you will have total control, and at other times as part of a team working on larger projects, and therefore you should be a confident self starter.

Training will be provided in house and the candidate would be expected to undertake day release at Falkirk College as they work towards higher qualifications.

Education

The position is ideal for a high school leaver who would rather go straight into industry than to University. The hands on nature of the business allows those with ambition and drive to progress. Our technical and commercial team are keen to pass on their specialised knowledge and our very own Operations Director started as an apprentice 20 years ago.

Personality and problem solving is far more important to us than education achievement so far, although a strong understanding in Maths and other science subjects would be desirable.

COVID-19 considerations:
We have staff working remotely where possible, hand sanitisers have been fitted at every entrance and staff are issued with individual hand sanitisers and masks in the rare situations where social distancing is not possible to undertake specific tasks.

The successful candidate will benefit from flexible working hours, Monday to Friday, a competitive salary with up to a 15% annual bonus, 34.5 days of holiday per year and a friendly, fast paced, working environment.  The company is currently based in Grangemouth but will be moving to larger premises nearer Edinburgh in the next 6 – 12 months in order to support our expansion.
