Determination of glass transition temperature

Amorphous and partially crystalline plastics, when heated, pass from the glassy-viscous to the rubbery state. The temperature at which this transition occurs is the glass transition temperature, Tg. One of the most precise techniques to obtain the Tg of the polymers is the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) through our UKAS accredited testing standards ISO 11357-2:2020 and ASTM E1356-14.

A small piece of plastics (approximately 10 mg) is heated and cooled at a control rate under nitrogen. During the heating and the cooling cycles the following parameters are obtained:

  • Glass transition temperature
  • Glass transition step height: difference in specific heat capacity at T
